Chaco Canyon

Yesterday the moon was blue,
circled in silver,
looking like it was stamped
from the same cloth as the sky.
Today it is a half circle,
a shield facing the setting sun.
Tomorrow will bring a hollow,
pale shimmer that apes the day.

The crow circles quietly
above the curve of the canyon wall.
He looks back and sees tomorrow.
He looks up and sees today.
He looks down and sees yesterday.
He confuses past and present.
He ignores tomorrow.
Today ebbs into the past.

The crow glides restlessly
along the curve of the canyon wall.
He confuses past and present.
He ignores tomorrow.
The past echoes down the canyon.
The afternoon wind stops
and the future whispers in the evening.
And today ebbs into the past.
