No Shore Meditation

They stood together
yet apart somehow
each aware
and unaware

Staring into the stream
and hearing it breathe and sigh
just as the breeze did around them

They had come here by fate
each by a different path
each alone and yet not

And each knew this was the moment
when they must settle this choice
that was not a choice
when they must define who they each would be
forever

“We are vessels, are we not?” Tuco asked

After a moment Arlu replied
“I think that we are, rather, that which is in the vessel.”
she paused, looking still
at the slow moving stream

Then she looked up
looked into Tuco’s eyes, touched his mustache
with her glance, lingered
briefly before turning back to the stream
“We are the water,
not the fish.” she said

“The fish come and go,
we merely go.”

She looked over at him
stepped over her past

With all her effort
she would go

As with water
she would go.
