Morning Walk - 12/11/04
shortly after 8 AM

Walking West, coming to cross street,
yard sale being setup
at the house across from my street.
An older couple starting late, little out.
I wonder at the spare furnished rooms
behind those open doors.
The garage, long ago, became a spare bedroom.
For who?

Next door, the younger group -
late 20s? early 30's? -
work on their renovation of the front yard.
The old tree gone, a circle drive in,
now they put roof to new car-port.
Route 66 sign still in front bedroom window.

Turn North, couple blocks and across the way,
the corner house still has "sale pending" on the For Sale sign.
Small place, an early house here, the cars gone
from drive and side street. The 30 and 40 somethings
came in and cleared them out. The furniture too.
Fixed the roof and yard. I was never sure if the couple
was still around. Empty house now.
For Sale sign says there's a pool in backyard.
Must be small.

More North, then turn East.
I pass the new houses built to overwhelm the lots.
Wonder why someone builds a two story
that only see's the neighbors' backyard.
Then the old, small house with large lot.
Invisible, the quail quietly all, respond,
in the shrubs along the front fence.

More East, then turn South.
Car in driveway, "I -heart- U Ray'
filling the back window.
An older woman walks past, then begins
a slight run. Tight stretch pants cover slim legs.
She slowly pulls ahead as she misses the passing treasures.
The fluffy cat, calico, on the car roof in the carport.
Watching the street, white chest and chin, and
spreading onto shoulders. Magnificant creature!
Quiet December morn, weather great,
wonders everywhere.
