The Supreme Way is not difficult
If only you do not pick and choose.
Neither love nor hate,
And you will clearly understand....
Tuco turned at the sound.
He'd forgotten where his horse was
and the twig snap startled him
as the horse returned
from behind him.
"If only you do not pick and choose...."
He considered how to do that.
Be
off by a hair,
And you are as far from it as heaven from earth.
If you want the Way to appear,
Be neither for nor against.
For and against opposing each other
This is the mind's disease....
Tuco rubbed the horse's neck
as it nuzzled his shoulder.
"Be neither for nor against...."
How does a horse do that, he wondered.
The horse nipped his shoulder
and turned back to the hay
pretending to ignore him
as it began to eat.
This lesson rested lightly in Tuco's heart.
Tuco
beamed
agreement,
turned back
to his cup of coffee,
and the quiet,
warm
fire.
