Snow Squall in Spring

She sat down across from me
he sat shortly after
at the next table
Soon he was talking
I watched, unobtrusive, casual

Animated
it seemed to click for him
to be so easy
as the conversation flowed

Then
after a time
she got up
went over

Leaning in
she spoke
close to his ear
I couldn’t hear
as winter rolled
across his face
couldn’t hear
as he spoke
casual
as she shook his hand
moved away

He sat
looked
quiet
past the unread paper

Toward the empty chair
at the next table.
